Putting Belief Before Safety -The Alarming Decision to Remove AEDs from Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Halls

The chance of survival from a cardiac arrest significantly decreases if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is not nearby. Without immediate defibrillation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), the survival rate can be as low as 5-10%. When an AED is available and used promptly, survival rates can increase to 40% or higher. The critical factor is speed and response.

Announcements and reminders are released for Kingdom Halls of Jehovah’s Witnesses every month. This month, the announcement, particularly for the U.S., emphasizes that though they view life as a sacred gift from Jehovah, due to the “training and maintenance needed to keep these devices legally, AEDs should not be installed at Kingdom Halls.” Therefore, they are instructing AEDs to be removed and disposed of.

Announcements and Reminders- September 2024

Though it is recommended, you do not need formal training to use an Automated External Defibrillator. AEDs are designed to be used by any citizen. They are easy to use and provide voice instructions to the user. AEDs will only deliver a shock if the person needs one. It seems that the Jehovah’s Witnesses may prioritize their belief in divine protection and view reliance on external emergency devices as unnecessary or inconsistent with their faith.

The total cost of installing an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) includes the unit, installation, and signage. It can run around $2,500.00. The AED can range from $1,200 to $3,000, depending on the model, accessories, and features.

Jehovah’s Witnesses are thought to have tens of billions of dollars in assets and rely on anonymous donations from its members. What does it reveal about an organization that opts to “pray away” an emergency concerning the lives of its members who financially support it?

Most states in the U.S. have enacted laws that either specifically include AED use in their Good Samaritan laws or have separate AED-related immunity statutes. Those states are California, Florida, New York, Texas, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Michigan, and Georgia.

All 50 states and the District of Columbia have some form of Good Samaritan law that covers emergency assistance, and the majority include or have additional provisions for AED use.

If you would like to help raise awareness about the Jehovah’s Witness Organization’s decision to remove AEDs from its Kingdom halls, please contact your local news and journalists and provide the link to this article.

I want to thank the advocate, Larchwood, for first raising awareness of this news.
