New World Translation: Genesis Chapter 6

Since, the publication of their first bible in 1950, Jehovah’s Witnesses have made three major changes to their bibles. After the release of their first fully bound bible entitled New World Translation of the Holy Scriptures in 1961, they revised this edition in 1984 and then again in 2013.

There are major differences in content between their three bible editions. But what are they? it’s very difficult to know because the Watchtower Society, the organization behind Jehovah’s Witnesses, has not included a change log detailing the differences. Therefore, AvoidJW.org is pleased to provide you with a chapter by chapter comparison of the differences between these editions of their bible.

Text in BLUE is what is different between the 1961 Edition and the 1984 Edition

Text in RED is what has been deleted from the 1984 Edition when compared with the 2013 Edition.

Text in PURPLE is where the text has been completely revised.

Text in GREEN is what has been added to the 2013 Edition when compared with the 1984 Edition.

Genesis

Chapter 6

1961 Edition

1 Now it came about that when men started to grow in numbers on the surface of the ground and daughters were born to them,

2 then the sons of God began to notice the daughters of men, that they were good-looking, and they went to taking wives for themselves of all whom they selected.

3 After that Jehovah said: “My spirit shall not act toward man indefinitely in that he is also flesh. Accordingly his days shall amount to a hundred and twenty years.”

4 The Neph’i.lim proved to be in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God continued to have relations with the daughters of men and they bore sons to them, they were the mighty ones who were of that world,  the men of fame.

5 Consequently Jehovah saw that the badness of man had become great in the earth and every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only bad all the time.

6 And Jehovah felt regrets that he had made men in the earth and he felt hurt at his heart.

7 So Jehovah said: “I am going to wipe men whom I have created off the surface of the ground, from man to domestic animal, to creeping animal and to flying creature of the heavens, because I do regret that I have made them.

8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of Jehovah.

9 This is the history of Noah. Noah was a righteous man. He proved himself faultless among his contemporaries. Noah walked with the God.

10 In time Noah became father to three sons, Shem, Ham and Ja’pheth.

11 And the earth came to be ruined in the sight of the God and the earth became filled with violence

12 So God saw the earth and, look! it was ruined, because all flesh had ruined its way on the earth.

13 After that God said to Noah: “The end of all flesh has come before me, because the earth is full of violence as a result of them, and here I am bringing them to ruin together with the earth.

14 Make for yourself an ark out of wood of a resinous tree. You will make compartments in the ark, and you must cover it inside and outside with tar.

15 And this is how you will make it: three hundred cubits the length of the ark, fifty cubits its width, and thirty cubits its height.

16 You will make an opening for illumination for the ark and you will complete it to the extent of a cubit from the roof, and the entrance of the ark you will put in its side; you will make it w1th a lower story a second story and a third story.

17 “And as for me, here I am bringing a deluge of waters upon the earth to bring to ruin all flesh in which the force of life is active from under the heavens. Everything that is in the earth will expire.

18 And I do establish my covenants with you, and you must go into the ark, you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.

19 And of every living creature of every sort of flesh, two of each, you will bring into the ark to preserve them alive with you. Male and female they will be.

20 Of the flying creatures according to their kinds and of the domestic animals according to their kinds, of all creeping animals of the ground according to their kinds, two of each will go in there to you to preserve them alive.

21 And as for you, take for yourself every sort of food that is eaten, and you must gather it to yourself and it must serve as food for you and for them.”

22 And Noah proceeded to do according to all that God had commanded him. He did just so.

1984 Edition

1 Now it came about that when men started to grow in numbers on the surface of the ground and daughters were born to them,

2 then the sons of the [true] God began to notice the daughters of men, that they were good-looking; and they went taking wives for themselves, namely, all whom they chose.

3 After that Jehovah said: “My spirit shall not act toward man indefinitely in that he is also flesh. Accordingly his days shall amount to a hundred and twenty years.”

The Neph′i·lim proved to be in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of the [true] God continued to have relations with the daughters of men and they bore sons to them, they were the mighty ones who were of old, the men of fame.

Consequently Jehovah saw that the badness of man was abundant in the earth and every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only bad all the time.

And Jehovah felt regrets that he had made men in the earth, and he felt hurt at his heart.

So Jehovah said: “I am going to wipe men whom I have created off the surface of the ground, from man to domestic animal, to moving animal and to flying creature of the heavens, because I do regret that I have made them.”

But Noah found favor in the eyes of Jehovah.

This is the history of Noah. Noah was a righteous man. He proved himself faultless among his contemporaries. Noah walked with the [true] God.

10 In time Noah became father to three sons, Shem, Ham and Ja′pheth.

11 And the earth came to be ruined in the sight of the [true] God and the earth became filled with violence.

12 So God saw the earth and, look! it was ruined, because all flesh had ruined its way on the earth.

13 After that God said to Noah: “The end of all flesh has come before me, because the earth is full of violence as a result of them; and here I am bringing them to ruin together with the earth.

14 Make for yourself an ark out of wood of a resinous tree. You will make compartments in the ark, and you must cover it inside and outside with tar.

15 And this is how you will make it: three hundred cubits the length of the ark, fifty cubits its width, and thirty cubits its height.

16 You will make a tso′har [roof; or, window] for the ark, and you will complete it to the extent of a cubit upward, and the entrance of the ark you will put in its side; you will make it with a lower [story], a second [story] and a third [story].

17 “And as for me, here I am bringing the deluge of waters upon the earth to bring to ruin all flesh in which the force of life is active from under the heavens. Everything that is in the earth will expire.

18 And I do establish my covenant with you; and you must go into the ark, you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.

19 And of every living creature of every sort of flesh, two of each, you will bring into the ark to preserve them alive with you. Male and female they will be.

20 Of the flying creatures according to their kinds and of the domestic animals according to their kinds, of all moving animals of the ground according to their kinds, two of each will go in there to you to preserve them alive.

21 And as for you, take for yourself every sort of food that is eaten; and you must gather it to yourself, and it must serve as food for you and for them.”

22 And Noah proceeded to do according to all that God had commanded him. He did just so.

2013 Edition

1 Now when men started to grow in number on the surface of the ground and daughters were born to them,

the sons of the true God began to notice that the daughters of men were beautiful. So they began taking as wives all whom they chose.

3 Then Jehovah said: “My spirit will not tolerate man indefinitely, because he is only flesh. Accordingly, his days will amount to 120 years.”

The Neph′i·lim were on the earth in those days and afterward. During that time the sons of the true God continued to have relations with the daughters of men, and these bore sons to them. They were the mighty ones of old times, the men of fame.

Consequently, Jehovah saw that man’s wickedness was great on the earth and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only bad all the time.

Jehovah regretted that he had made men on the earth, and his heart was saddened.

So Jehovah said: “I am going to wipe men whom I have created off the surface of the ground, man together with domestic animals, creeping animals, and flying creatures of the heavens, for I regret that I have made them.”

But Noah found favor in the eyes of Jehovah.

This is the history of Noah. Noah was a righteous man. He proved himself faultless among his contemporaries. Noah walked with the true God.

10 In time Noah became father to three sons, Shem, Ham, and Ja′pheth.

11 But the earth had become ruined in the sight of the true God, and the earth was filled with violence.

12 Yes, God looked upon the earth, and it was ruined; all flesh had ruined its way on the earth.

13 After that God said to Noah: “I have decided to put an end to all flesh, because the earth is full of violence on account of them, so I am bringing them to ruin together with the earth.

14 Make for yourself an ark from resinous wood. You will make compartments in the ark and cover it with tar inside and outside.

15 This is how you will make it: The ark should be 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high.

16 You will make a window for light for the ark, one cubit from the top. You should put the entrance of the ark in its side and make it with a lower deck, a second deck, and a third deck.

17 “As for me, I am going to bring floodwaters upon the earth to destroy from under the heavens all flesh that has the breath of life. Everything on the earth will perish.

18 And I am establishing my covenant with you, and you must go into the ark, you, your sons, your wife, and your sons’ wives with you.

19 And bring into the ark two of every sort of living creature in order to preserve them alive with you, a male and a female

20 of the flying creatures according to their kinds, the domestic animals according to their kinds, and all creeping animals of the ground according to their kinds, two of each will go in there to you to preserve them alive.

21 For your part, you are to collect and take with you every kind of food to eat, to serve as food for you and for the animals.”

22 And Noah did according to all that God had commanded him. He did just so.
